Five Parsecs from Home

Sorry for being so quiet for so long. I have been doing stuff - mostly painting and modelling.
I managed to have another game of Sellswords and Spellslingers over the Christmas - this time as a co-operative game with my son. As it was his first game, we played "Through the Badlands" again. I decided that it was even more fun with two players.
Like last time, we did manage to escape the pursuing Orcs. Well, almost, just as my son's last figure was about to make his escape off the board, he was ambushed and killed. All my figures and the rest of his looked on helplessly from the safety of making it off the board - very dramatic - a bit like the Bridge of Khazad-Dum. Flee, you fools!
Unfortunately, we were enjoying ourselves so much that we forgot to take any pictures.
Sorry.
I'm gradually increasing my numbers of 10mm fantasy figures both for skirmish gaming using S&S and larger-scale conflicts using Mayhem. And I'll start selling off my 15mm fantasy armies (see elsewhere on this blog if you're interested in any of them). This is all in an effort to convince my wife that I'm downsizing in preparation for retirement!

Meanwhile I have also been building up my 15mm scifi stuff and have actually managed to have a game of Five Parsecs from Home which was great fun!

I've decided to devote this blog just to the fantasy stuff and create a new blog (Tanaquil Standpoint) for the Five Parsecs campaign.

My First Game of the Year!

Looking back at this blog, the last actual game I played was 2nd January 2015 - that is terrible. Last year was way too busy or I spent far too muh time prevaricating. It certainly doesn't help that my main opponent (Son Number 2) now lives in Knutsford - 160 mile away.

Well we finally had another game of Mayhem - Mintaurs versus Fish People.
Sorry about the poor quality photos - new phone rather than my camera. I resort to the latter from now on.

The Fish People Army
Here we have the fish people. The general is the octopus at the rear - rather slow but with a pretty high command dice because he can dirrect eight units at a time.
On the right flank, are the People Spearmen supported by a Fish Giant and on the left flank are Fish People Swordsmen, one unit of which is elite. In the centre is a Fish Hero.

Minotaur Left Flank

The Minotaurs were pretty basic - just eight units of Minotaurs, one of which was elite.
The left flank had a hero supporting its rear.
The right flank had a unit of wolves in front and the general at the rear.

Minotaur Right Flank
Having not played for a year, we were both a bit rusty so I dare say we got things wrong but we had fun so everything was good.

Basically, my Minotaurs advanced on the Fish People and slaughtered them. The Giant Fish did manage to knobble my elite minotaurs but that was it and I'm afraid that I was too good at throwing straight 1's.

One spear unit and two swordsmen already wiped out and due to some really poor dice throwing the Fish Giant is rather left out in the cold.

Finally the Giant Fish tries to get close enough to lob a rock or two but to no avail. The swordsmen are wiped out and the Fish People Army breaks.

Let's hope I manage another gam before 2017!
And in the meantime, I hope you all have a wonderful 2016.

Froudian Goblin Army Started

Well, here's the start of the Froudian Goblins - a base of Blades, Spears and Flier.

All the figures are Pendraken 10mm. The figures on each flank are Gnomes and are as they come. The figure with knife raised is actually a ratman. I've added a little chin under the snout to make it a little more humanoid. The taller figure at the back is actually a beggar with a head made of ProCreate.

These are all Pendraken Gnomes but the figure second from the right has had his sword replaced with a spear.

A Pendraken owl flies over a seriously converted Gnome. The figure started as the shieldless Gnome with spear (second from the left above). I've chopped off his left arm, head and spear. Then I've replaced his head with one copied from the Gnome with sword using Oyumaru and ProCreate and added left arm, a shield and axe.

I'm reasonably pleased with it.

The bases are a little different from my norm - I have used 1mm static grass from WarWorld rather than the usual Javis longer stuff and a few 2mm Silflor tufts which I hadn't used before. They are really nice and simple to use so I can see future bases having a few of them. Obviously the toadstools are home-made.

I think that this army is going to take some time to complete because I want to try to create  figures of very different heights like Froud's Goblins and I also want some Froud-like trolls so there is going to be quite a bit of converting.

But it's a start. I've entered all three bases in the Pendraken Painting Competition but I will be amazed if I get anywhere - there are some really brilliant entries this year.

Arrival of the Recruits

Pendraken Miniatures
Well, this morning the goodies arrived from Pendraken Miniatures. I only ordered them late last Thursday so well done, Dave, Leon and the other PM minions, for a speedy service yet again.

So here's what I've got to start the Froudian army off:-

FGN1 Gnomes with Swords
FGN2 Gnomes with Spears
FGN3 Gnomes with Lances (ruddy long spears)
AC38 Giant Owls

The Gnomes with Swords and Spears come in two varieties (one with shield and one without) while there there is just one version of the Gnome with Lance (see below).

Like the Minotaurs I bought from Pendraken (see here) I plan to convert the Gnomes so that there is more variety. Obviously the poses of these small figures are far more compact than the Minotaurs so this is likely to be a bigger challenge but let's see how I get on. The head of the Gnome with Sword and no shield is nicely clear of clothing, weapons, etc so should give me the chance to copy its head with a bit of Oyumaru so that I can convert a few other figures into Gnomes

I was thinking of mounting a Gnome on each of the owls but I am not sure that the owls are big enough to convincingly take the weight of them. I might have a rethink on that one.

I have my day off tomorrow so hopefully I'll have an hour or two to have a play.

Recruiting a New Army - Decisions, Decisions

Last  year I sold off my Animal Farm and Pirate Armies (see here) as they didn't really fit in with my others. Not surprisingly I have been thinking about creating another army for a while but what to do? So many figures, so little time!

I quite fancy doing one based on Black Hat's "not-Ewoks" Tolero at some stage, especially now that they do them mounted too. But not at the moment.

I could do with another human army but am still contemplating what type to go for - barbarian, peasant revolt, aztec, caveman (with various creatures).

In the end my mind has been made up by the Pendraken painting competition 2015. I've always liked the art of Brian Froud and have recently been very inspired by DeafNala's "Last Hurrah Project" on the Lead Adventurers Forum. So I am going to give it a go to create a "Froudian" army using Pendraken's 10mm Gnomes as a basis. The competition is only open for a month so I am going to start small with a couple of units and if they work out I will go for it big time.

A Fight to the Death

The Initial Set Up
As promised, here is the report of this morning's battle between a small band of mounted orcs accompanied by a giant and a slightly larger band of crusaders supported by a host of angels.

As my previous post explained, this was my son's first game of Mayhem and I was seriously rusty as I haven't played for over a year and didn't find the time to fully refresh myself of the rules.

The Orcs and Giant Move Forward
Rolling command dice to decide who would start, the orcs won and ordered a general advance.
The mounted archers took the high ground supported by the giant. The mounted lancers advanced rather more hesitatingly. One unit of archers took a shot at the crusaders' crossbowmen but to no effect.

The Crusaders Stand Firm

The crusaders took their turn and rolled a command die of 1 - that could have gone better! Clearly, led by the abbot and monk, the crusaders were seeking to follow the way of peace.

All units remained steady. One unit of crossbowmen returned fire against the mounted orc archers and did enough to cause them disorder.

The Advance Continues
Move Two
Having rallied the mounted archers, the orcs and giant continued to advance. This time both units of mounted archers fired at the crossbowmen but again with no success. My son started to question the d20 roll for a bow when crossbows have a d12.

This time I decided to use the default for command points rather than risk rolling another 1.

The Abbot's Hunting Dogs Attack
The abbot sent in his trusty hunting beagles to take out the the troublesome mounted archers and managed to disorder them.

One unit of crossbowmen fired on the other mounted archers while the other crossbowmen fired at the giant but neither had any success.

Both my son and I were having dreadful luck with the dice rolls and that was going to continue throughout the battle.

The Giant Strides In
Move Three
Again the mounted archers rallied and fired upon the crossbowmen throwing them into disorder. The  other archers fought off the hunting dogs and destroyed them with a 1.

The giant decided to charge into the waiting spearmen and also succeeded in causing disorder amongst them.

Things were looking dodgy for the crusaders, we thought.
The Giant's In Trouble
Time to take a risk - the command die is rolled and fortunately I got a high enough number.

Both the crossbowmen and spearmen rallied and then both units of spearmen set upon the giant. The spearmen rolled a 1 and the giant rolled a 10, rewarding the giant with nine damage tokens in one fell swoop.

Meanwhile the crossbowmen took another shot at the mounted archers and finally wiped them out with a natural 1.
Orc Archers to the Rescue?
And that was all the crusaders could do that move. Initiating combat against a fear-inducing enemy drained a lot of command points. However, the giant was rendered all but useless with all those damage points. It would need 10 command points to activate or risk being wiped out by taking a damage roll.

Move Four
The remaining orc archers charged into the rear of the flanking unit of spearmen but only managed to disorder them.
The Giant Falls
Meanwhile the lancers continued to advance but far too late for the giant.

The spearmen rallied and turned to face the archers.

The other spearmen attacked the giant and inflicted another damage token, causing the giant to roll. Having to get less than 13 on ten dice...
Yup, he was a gonna.
Knights in White Satin

Finally the knights and angels got involved in the action.
The angels swept down upon the orc lancers and did absolutely nothing. The knights charged into the rear of the orc archers and wiped them out.

Now the crusaders were well and truly on top. The orcs were down to less than 50% of their strength and we were playing the breaking point rule would have to role a command dice to see if they would continue.
This time they passed.
The Tables Turn Again
Move Five
Fortunately for the orcs, they rolled a high command die score too and went into overdrive.
One unit of lancers took on the angels and wiped them out with a 1. [I really should have remembered to designate them as a horde - the same thing happened to them in my first game].
The other unit hit the spearmen and destroyed them; then the knights and wiped them out to and then hit the crossbowmen.
Now it was the crusaders in trouble again. Just one unit of crossbowmen left so the breaking point rule applied to them too.
The Score Evened
The crusaders passed the test and the crossbowmen attacked the lancers and beat them.
Now it was just one unit each.
Move Six
Both armies passed their breaking point roles even with the increase in the number od dice.
The two remaining units squared up to each other and swapped slogs against each other. Firstly the lancers disordered the crossbowmen and then the crossbowmen rallied and disordered the lancers.
Victory at Last!
Then in Move Seven, having passed their third breaking point roll, the orc lancers attacked the crossbowmen but received a natural 1 against them and popped their clogs.
Game over, Man, game over.
And a good time was had by both of us. I think that we both loved the way the battle swung from one side to the other and back again.
Next time I will designate those angels correctly and I think that my son has worked out not to send in a giant without a bit of support.
And on that subject, it was the first time that we had used one of the "ready-made" monstrous creatures and I think both of us weren't entirely happy with its profile. I wonder why Mr Spivey decided to "pre-create" the three monstrous creatures, rather than offer factors to allow players to create their own monsters as they understand them as he has with all other troop types.
Any way, it looks like we'll be having another game soon

At Last Another Game (Whoopee!)

I was tempted to write a review of 2014 like so many fellow blogging wargamers have done but I realised that my post would be rather short.
It has been quite a year in family- and work-life with one regularly overspilling into the other even more than normal so very little painting has been done and no gaming.
But all being well, one of my sons and I will be having a game of Mayhem tomorrow.
It's his first Mayhem game and only my second (after a long break) so we're starting small and will probably make a few mistakes (Brent, feel free to correct us).
So without further ado, here are the two armies - Orc v Crusaders:-

There and Back Again - a Wargamer's Tale

Well, 2013 was an interesting and quite active year for me.

Wargaming-wise I discovered Mayhem and actually managed a game which I thoroughly enjoyed. I almost got a second game in too but my son decided he wanted his bedroom back!

I also discovered Pulp Alley and managed a game of that too but decided that I am one of the few who didn't like it. I think it's the cards that did it for me. Dice - good, Cards - bad!

I managed to paint up and convert quite a few Pendraken 10mm figures (though still have plenty in my lead pile) and also did some 15mm stuff.

I bought a couple of hills after two attempts. The Royal Mail lost the first set but
The Scene sorted the problem out brilliantly. And for birthday and Christmas I got some roads from Fat Franks which I haven't used yet but they look good.
And I sold off all my scifi figures and scenery.

And personally there was a lot to thank God for.
My wife landed a job which she absolutely loves to bits as a teaching assistant at one of our local schools - class TA with nursery in the morning and one-to-one with a child with Down's Syndrome in the afternoon.
Our eldest son continues training as an assistant manager at the local pub and is really flourishing.
Our second son received an award in his second year of university (3D Games Art) from heads of industry when in was competing with final year students.
Our third son managed to drum continuously for 71 hours to break the Guiness World Record for Team Drumming and has developed and grown in so many ways.
And our fourth son who is on the autistic spectrum succeeded in riding his bike without stabilisers and has also developed in so many ways.
And I feel that I had a pretty good year too.

And what does 2014 hold? Who knows?
Hopefully more time for gaming but life is already looking quite demanding so we'll have to see.
Wishing you a wonderful year.
Hugh

Back from Whence You Came, Creature of Hell!

One of the troop types featured in Mayhem is the Swarm - a unit that makes more of a nuisance of itself rather than killing anyone. I quite fancied having a swarm unit but I have never liked the idea of masses of frogs, rats, etc in a battle. In a dungeon or skirmish, yes, but in open warfare, no!

Chaos Swarm
So I've been looking for something to make little a mass of little creatures of Chaos - imps, perhaps and came across these. They are actually from Dark Realm's 6mm Scifi Range and go for £3.00 for 25.

I managed to mount nineteen of the little blighters on a 40mm by 30mm base (so that they can also be used as a HotT horde). So that leaves me with six more to use in fantasy or pulp skirmishes.

That's the good news. The bad news is that I am not going to manage to fight the battle between the Crusaders and Chaos Army before my son returns home from uni. So they have all had to return to their boxes until after Christmas. Not that I am envious of all you lucky people who have wargame rooms - not many, Benny!

Here There Be Dragons!

Well, there's one dragon.
Since starting HOTT in 15mm I have never found a dragon figure that met my requirements:
  • It must look convincing
  • It must fit on the appropriate HoTT 15mm base
  • It must be pretty cheap.

I had toyed with AD&D Miniatures baby dragons but they looked too much like... well, like babies. Finally I found this:
Reaper Bones Young Fire Dragon with 15mm Spearmen

It's from Reaper's DHL Bones Plastic plastic range  and comes in at £2.76 from Miniature Heroes in the UK. I have read some comments about the plastic being too bendy on some websites but the figure worked just fine for me. I immersed the figure in boiling water for a wile so that I could lower the wings a little and then plunged it in cold water so that they stayed in place. It painted very easily.

Now I just need to decide what army to ally it with. But of course it will also fit in with Mayhem, RRtK and WHAA in 10mm.

BTW I can recommend Miniature Heroes too - quick delivery and first class customer service from Tim Fitch.

The Armies Draw Up Their Lines

The Battlefield
Well, the terrain is laid out and the figures are deployed using WHAA's rules again.

The Chaos Army
The Chaos Army looks pretty small compared to the Crusaders.
The Crusaders

From top to bottom, you've got the mounted Chaos Knights, the Mass of Chaos with the Major Demons behind it/them, the unit of Large Demons and then the Chaos Warriors with Kronos the Champion behind them.

Here you have Brother Equile and the Crossbowmen on the hill (far enough away from the Abbot that his sensitive nose won't pick up the smell of swine), two Hordes of Peasants encouraged by Brother Germaline, two units of Spearmen, the Abbot, three more Hordes and finally two units of mounted Knights.

Now it is just a matter of time. Battle needs to be commenced and concluded soon. The lads will soon be back for Christmas and will be invading every spare space we have, including my wargame room (it's actually one of their bedrooms!)

A Champion for my Minotaurs

I've got enough Pendraken Minotaurs to make quite a few warband bases and have a chieftain and shaman as characters but felt I needed a champion that looked a bit different from the others. All the Pendraken ones are based three poses so I thought that I'd do a bit of converting with an Ogre by the same company.
And voila!

Minotaur Champion
I used Oyumaru to make a mould of one of the other Minotaur's faces; then cast a new head with Procreate. Having removed the Ogres' head, I superglued the new Minotaur face on and then built it up with more Procreate with a bit of wire added to form the horns.

Now I just need to think about creating a standard bearer.

No One Would Have Believed in the Last Years That this World Was Being Watched Keenly and Closely by Intelligences Greater than Man's...

"Why, O why did you forsake us?" Abbot Crispin whispered as he knelt in earnest prayer on the cold stone floor of his private chapel. "Was our cause not worthy of you? Were you not glorified by our bloodshed?"
But there was no response form his god.
Instead the silence was interrupted by a sheepish knock on the door.

The abbot sighed and beckoned the knocker in but soon regretted it as Brother Equile entered the room followed rapidly by the stench of the pig sty that he had just left.

"Yes, Brother, what do you want?" Crispin demanded impatiently, still finding it difficult to exercise the forgiveness that he so often encouraged his flock to embrace after the monk's treachery at the battle on the steppes.

"Father Abbot, I bring dire news" Equile announced his head bowed low.

"What is it, man?" asked the abbot, trying to fend of the smell of pig swill.

"A messenger has come from the next parish," explained the monk. "He speaks of creatures appearing from another plane - evil beings, soulless beings, followers of another god."

"Enough of your blasphemy!" the abbot shouted. "There is only one god. Get out and tell that foolish messenger not to spread such terrible lies or he will face excommunication."

The monk scuttled out the room. He had learnt not to challenge his superior.
Turning his back on the closing door, the abbot wandered to the window and surveyed the  rolling landscape. In the distance he could see dark smoke billowing into the sky. But no, that wasn't smoke! They were dark flying beasts - creatures that he had never seen before. And as he looked on a troublesome dread crept upon him.

Once more Crispin fell to his knees: "Lord, we need your help. Do not abandon us in our hour of need."

Well, I enjoyed my recent game of Mayhem so much that I thought I would get going on another one straight away, though the battle may take a while to actually set up. And this time the creatures of Chaos are going to come to Crispin's homeland seeking to take advantage of the Crusader's weakness after their recent failed attack on the Orcs.

Once again, I've gone for armies of about 200 crowns and I've also adopted RRtK's idea where half of the crowns are used for a base army and then the rest of the crowns are spent on units which are selected by rolling dice. This allows a general to be sure of having certain units in his army but unable to choose the whole make up of it. Of course, this can mess things up a little as there were some units of my Chaos Army that I was hoping to give an airing to but they weren't chosen by the dice rolls and I'm afraid that I didn't manage to recruit the angels this time. Clearly Crispin's god is having one almighty sulk at the moment.

And so here are the armies:
